PROTECTION – The main reason to wear boot covers is to protect the ice skate. Most figure skate boots are made of leather. And under it are sharp blades. When doing moves with one foot or both feet in the air, there is a risk that the blade of one skate damages the boot of the other.
What are skate covers for?
Skate guards are typically a hard, slim plastic cover designed to protect the sharp edge of your blades. They’re fine for avoiding nicks from other gear in your equipment bag, protecting your hands while blindly fumbling through your bag and from tearing a hole in the side of your bag.

Toe guards are also known as toe protectors. The front of your roller skates can take a beating through crashes or simply running into a wall. Protect your roller skates and make them last longer by using a toe guard.

I’d be afraid of damaging my blades if I walked over concrete while wearing fluffy skate guards on my skates.
