What is the Algebra tile method of factoring a quadratic?

By Michael Gray

What is the Algebra tile method of factoring a quadratic?

Algebra tiles can be used as a model for factoring trinomials. When you multiply two binomials, your result is a trinomial. We used area models to multiply binomials. Therefore, to be able to factor a trinomial using algebra tiles, you must first rearrange the tiles into the shape of a rectangle.

When can you use algebra tiles?

For example, green rectangle tiles can represent positive variables and yellow rectangle tiles can represent negative variables. To use algebra tiles, we place square and rectangle tiles on either side of our equation until we have all the numbers and variables covered.

Is factoring the same as dividing?

When distributing, you multiply a series of terms by a common factor. When factoring, you seek to find what a series of terms have in common and then take it away, dividing the common factor out from each term.

What are the limitations of algebra tiles?

The Algebra Tiles

  • The Algebra Tiles do not provide a corner piece.
  • The absence of 3-D blocks is a limitation, but much can be done in two dimensions.
  • Likewise, the fact that there is only one variable is a limitation, but it is not fatal.

What are the advantages of using algebra tiles in factoring Trinomials?

Factor 2×2 + x – 3 Using Algebra tiles is so helpful when factoring quadratic trinomials where the A value is greater than 1 and B and/or C are negative. The tiles make the process so much more intuitive! Right away it’s obvious that we do not have enough pieces to make a nice, even rectangle.

Why do we use algebra tiles?

Algebra tiles are typically used to explore integers, algebraic expressions, equations, factoring, and expanding. They can also be used to explore fractions and ratios. How many are recommended? Students usually work in pairs or small groups when using algebra tiles.
