How to Cast Glass Frit – 3D Glass

  1. Prepare Mold Glass Casting Molds Apply 3 to 4 thin coats of Primo Primer Primo Primer (#41515) on the mold using brush Primer applicator haik brush (#41601).
  2. Note: Re-apply primer after each firing.
  3. Fill Mold Fill mold with frit until the frit is mounded above the mold.

Glass casting is the process of melting glass into a mold where it solidifies and creates a glass object. Typical glass casting techniques include kiln casting and sand casting.

What do you use glass frit for?

Glass frit bonding is used to encapsulate surface micro-machined sensors, i.e. gyroscopes and accelerometers. Other applications are the sealing of absolute pressure sensor cavities, the mounting of optical windows and the capping of thermally active devices.

How do you fire glass frit?

Place the mold onto ceramic posts or a kiln shelf, inside the kiln….The schedule used for the pieces shown is:

  1. Ramp 1 – 900°F/hour to 1000°F. Hold for one minute.
  2. Ramp 2 – FULL speed to 1480°F. Hold for 15 minutes.
  3. Ramp 3 – FULL speed to 1100°F. No hold necessary.
  4. Ramp 4 – 300°F/hour to 955°F. Hold for 15 minutes.

Can you melt and cast glass?

Bottles can be melted by draping which is letting the weight of melted glass shape over a mold at 1200 F. Glass marbles can be melted until they stick together using the tack fusing method at 1350 F. Crushed pieces can be placed inside a mold by frit casting at 1480 F.

How do you make frit glass?

Heat up glass in a torch or kiln and plunge it into water. The hotter the glass is, the smaller the frit size will be. You may need to gently crush it to separate the fractured glass. Cut small pieces of glass and break them up in a hand held coffee grinder.
