What does a fuel flex sensor do?

By Isabella Floyd

What does a fuel flex sensor do?

Flex fuel sensors measure the amount of alcohol (ethanol is a form of alcohol) in the fuel passing through it. The sensor has a pre calibrated signal that is sent from the sensor in a 0-5v voltage indicating which amount of alcohol is present.

How accurate are flex fuel sensors?

It should be noted that while the sensor can output very precise changes, down to 0.1%, the part that actually reads ethanol content is accurate to ~10% under normal operating temperatures.

Where do you put the flex fuel sensor?

The sensor must be installed in the fuel return line between the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel tank, reference Figure 2. The sensor may be installed in any orientation; the direction of flow through the sensor does not matter.

What happens when fuel sensor goes bad?

A faulty fuel rail sensor may send an inaccurate signal to the computer which may cause the engine to experience hard starting. The engine may take a few cranks longer than normal to start and in more serious cases may not start at all.

Is it OK to mix E85 with regular gas?

If you own a vehicle that is designated as Flex-Fuel, the answer is yes. You can mix any ethanol-containing gasoline grades without worry. Yes, as long as you’re driving a “flex-fuel” vehicle, it won’t cause any problems. Depending on how much E85 you mix in, you might notice a drop in your MPG and in acceleration.

What are the symptoms of a bad flex fuel sensor?

Usually a bad or failing fuel rail sensor will produce a few symptoms that can alert the driver to a potential issue.

  • Hard starting. One of the first symptoms of a potential problem with the fuel rail sensor is hard starting.
  • Decrease in power, acceleration and fuel efficiency.
  • Check Engine Light comes on.

What is needed for flex fuel?

If your vehicle is fuel injected, and is 1995 or newer, you will only need two things in order to convert your engine to flex fuel. You will need an electronic control module that plugs in between the fuel injectors and the factory fuel injector electrical connectors.

Can you drive with a bad fuel sensor?

Engine stalling might occur as the fuel rail pressure sensor goes from bad to worse. You will be driving and then suddenly, your engine will stall. This will make driving extremely difficult (and dangerous) and it should motivate you to do something about it.

How much does it cost to replace a fuel sensor?

The average for Fuel Pressure Sensor is $478

Repair TypeZipCost
Fuel Pressure Sensor92418$283
Fuel Pressure Sensor30300$576
Fuel Pressure Sensor84126$364
Fuel Pressure Sensor28435$498

What happens if I accidentally put flex-fuel in my car?

Many newer cars are designed to run on ethanol, which is called flex-fuel. More than once, individuals have inadvertently put flex-fuel into their gasoline vehicle. While this isn’t ideal and can impact the vehicle’s ability to operate smoothly, in most cases, no long-term damage is done.
