Before George Lucas digitally inserted a CGI Jabba the Hutt into the original Star Wars, the vile gangster was played by a human actor. A human actor was originally on set to play Jabba the Hutt in Star Wars: A New Hope, but neither the actor nor the scene made the final cut in 1977.
Why was Jabba a man?
Jabba the Hutt was not written as a human or humanoid. He was always intended to be a giant slug. Lucas found himself unable to achieve his original vision while filming Episode IV, due to the limitations of visual effects technology, so he cast a man in the role (without any prosthetic enhancements).
