Is modified choke good for ducks?

By Isabella Floyd

Is modified choke good for ducks?

A modified choke tube (0.020”) is the best choke size for duck hunting. It allows for all-around performance for both decoying and passing shots. The pattern is so tight in close that decoying ducks are hard to hit. And even if you do hit them, their meat is often ruined.

What is an improved choke for?

Improved Cylinder choke has a slight constriction. It allows the shot string to spread fairly quickly. This is a good choice for quail, rabbits, and other upland game at relatively close ranges.

What shot is best for geese?

Most experts say the best loads for geese are sizes 1, BB, BBB, or T steel shot. For most hunting situations, BB or BBB shot is the most effective shot size. Both have plenty of pellets, but still enough energy to bring down a goose.

Can you shoot T shot through a modified choke?

Steel shot does nothing to a factory choke. You can potentially buldge a barrel shooting large steel shot through a tight choke (IM or Full), but you will have no problem shooting large steel through your factory IC or Modified choke.

Can I shoot slugs through an improved cylinder choke?

The conventional wisdom has long been that these slugs perform best with an Improved Cylinder choke. Though ammunition is highly variable, and all guns digest ammunition a little differently than one another, I’d be inclined to start with an IC choke. If your accuracy with this choke is acceptable, stick with it.

Can I shoot slugs through improved cylinder?

Yes, as long as you use rifled slugs and do not use any choke tighter than improved cylinder.

Can you use 4 shot for geese?

Yes. Just take ethical shots. A nice dense even pattern of 4’s and the correct lead on a goose inside ~30 yards will stone them.

Is number 2 shot good for geese?

I regularly shoot geese with 2 3/4″ #4s when I’m duck hunting, and 2s are my favorite steel shot size for geese over decoys. I feel like I get those hands up shake your head impossible misses far more often with BBs. I’ve tripled out of flocks with 2s that I likely would’ve missed at least once with BBs.

How many notches does a modified choke have?

The cylinder will have five notches on the end of the choke that will indicate it’s a cylinder. The improved cylinder will have four notches, the modified has three notches, the improved modified has two notches and the full has one notch.

Can I shoot steel through modified choke?

When using steel shot, you should only use stainless steel choke tubes with modified or more open chokes. You should not use steel shot with Extra Full, Full, or Improved Modified Chokes of any kind. If it is a fixed choke barrel, we do not recommend using steel shot, as it may damage your barrel(s).

What happens if you put a 20 gauge shell in a 12 gauge shotgun?

Smaller shotshells (such as 20-gauge shells), if mistakenly fed into a 12-gauge gun, will slip past the chamber and lodge in the barrel, causing serious personal injury or gun damage if a 12-gauge shell is loaded and fired. Some barrels are not stamped.

Do I need a modified choke for geese hunting?

However, conditions can change your plan as a hunter in a hurry. Geese may be landing further out in the decoys or maybe you can’t set up as close to the kill spot as you’d like. So selecting a choke that can make a lethal shot out to 30-40 yards may be necessary. Therefore I suggest a modified choke or even a full choke.

What is the best choke for duck hunting?

Improved cylinder and a modified choke with steel shots are best for duck hunting. Improved choke provides a wide shot for close targets. Modified choke is tighter yet it won’t over-constrict hard non-toxic shot and blow patterns.

What is a modified cylinder choke?

Modified choke has moderate constriction. The shot stays together longer, making the pattern denser and more useful at longer ranges. This choke is used often for dove hunting and is the preferred choke when using steel shot to hunt for ducks or geese. Also Know, is modified or improved cylinder tighter?

How far will a choke hold to kill a goose?

These chokes will hold a tighter pattern out to 30-40 yards that will kill a goose. Using chokes that offer a wider spread such as an improved cylinder may not hold a tight enough pattern to kill a goose. Therefore more often than not, crippling birds.
